The Story:

A pair of 18th century Swedish painted wood shield back dining chairs from the Gustavian period.  Circa 1780.  These chairs have been hand-scraped to reveal the original paint surface.  Lovely shield shaped backs with pierced slats and wood seats all supported on sturdy, round, tapering legs with cross stretchers.

The Gustavian style, named after King Gustav III of Sweden, is a restrained interpretation of the French Louis XV and Louis XVI style. King Gustav III was enamored with the neoclassical style and therefore created his own interpretation for Sweden.
