Swedish Gustavian Period Painted Chest, 18th Century

THE STORY:

A classically carved Swedish Gustavian painted chest featuring a carved lozenge design on the top drawer, fluted corner posts, tapered and fluted legs, and brass swag motif drawer pulls.  Circa 1790.

The Gustavian style, named after King Gustav III of Sweden, is a restrained interpretation of the French Louis XV and Louis XVI style. King Gustav III was enamored with the neoclassical style and therefore created his own interpretation for Sweden.
