Swedish Gustavian Fall-Front Secretary with Reeded Detail, 19th Century Antique

THE STORY:

A 19th century Swedish fall-front, painted secretary from the Gustavian period with brass hardware. This secretary displays neoclassical carving such as the beaded detail around the top, fluted and canted corners, reeded drawer fronts and a reeded drop-down desk featuring a lozenge design. There are a variety of drawers, including a long center drawer with a secret door all behind the desk surface.   Circa 1800.

The Gustavian style, named after King Gustav III of Sweden, is a restrained interpretation of the French Louis XV and Louis XVI style. King Gustav III was enamored with the neoclassical style and therefore created his own interpretation for Sweden.
