Pair of Swedish Gustavian Barrel Back Armchairs, 19th Century Antique

THE STORY:

A Swedish late Gustavian pair of armchairs in lightly refreshed original paint.  These stunning chairs have barrel backs with cravings of lions' heads. The frame features lamb's tongue carving throughout and the front legs are adorned with acanthus leaves.  This pair has been newly upholstered in vintage French hemp linen. Richly carved and comfortable.  Circa 1870.

The Gustavian style, named after King Gustav III of Sweden, is a restrained interpretation of the French Louis XV and Louis XVI style. King Gustav III was enamored with the neoclassical style and therefore created his own interpretation for Sweden.
